Impart exists to give every student, regardless of their background, the opportunity to learn to find their voice…
A Sutton Trust study has shown that over 50% of private schools have a debate society, compared to less than 20% of state-funded schools.
Our Founder, Francesca Reynolds, was one of those at a state-school without a debating society and had only one politics lesson during her entire secondary education. However, when she was given the opportunity to debate with a local private school, it changed the course of her life. She was provided with opportunities that boosted her aspirations, allowed her to explore the world, and gave her access to a network of people that continue to support her career today. Unfortunately, most state-funded schools can’t provide their students with the same kinds of opportunities.
Impart was founded to provide those opportunities for students just like Francesca, who care about the world and want to know more, but don’t currently have the chance to do so.
What We Do
Resources
We provide a free, high-quality resources designed to establish and maintain debating societies at state-funded schools. These resources are accessible and tailored for use by teachers who do not have prior debatig experience.
Workshops
We regularly visit our partner schools to support teachers and assist in running sessions and competitions.
External Competitions
Under the status quo, only a small fraction of state-educated students receive the coaching necesssary for competitions or national team trials. Through our training and subsisidies, we are able to support students to enter into these competitions.
Why Debating?
Critical Thinking
Students learn to question assumptions, identify biases, and consider multiple perspectives, fostering intellectual curiosity and independent thought. These skills are vital, not only for academics, but also for navigating complex real-world issues, making informed decisions, and contributing thoughtfully to society.
Oracy Skills
Debating encourages students to articulate their ideas clearly, listen actively, and respond thoughtfully, encouraging not just verbal fluency but also the ability to construct logical arguments and engage in respectful discourse.
Citizenship & Democracy
Debating and politics go hand in hand; thus, we also provide resources covering the basics of British politics to ensure everyone has the information needed to participate in democracy and political discussion.
